Beyond the AI headline
Follow the whole stack before forming a thesis.
Map the layers
A useful AI research map can include semiconductor design, manufacturing, networking, cloud services, software, and the electricity and buildings used by data centers. These categories describe business activities, not a promise that every company in them will benefit.
Separate demand from economics
More demand does not automatically mean better shareholder returns. Ask how much investment the business needs, how much cash it generates, and whether competition or customer concentration limits its pricing power.
Read the spending carefully
Compare capital expenditure, operating cash flow, and management commentary across reporting periods. A spending plan is a commitment of resources. The eventual revenue, profitability, and returns on that investment remain uncertain.
Name the risks
Potential questions include export restrictions, supply constraints, power availability, new competitors, customer concentration, and valuation. Find the relevant company’s risk disclosures rather than assuming a sector label tells the whole story.
Build a balanced research note
Write a thesis, supporting evidence, contradictory evidence, and the next filing you want to read. NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Amazon are examples for exploring different business models; their inclusion is not a recommendation.
